One-Handed Melee Weapons

Swords, axes, and hammers for close-quarters combat.

Last updated:

One-handed melee weapons are the foundation of One More Delve’s combat. Every swing is physics-driven, meaning the force and direction of your physical motion translates directly into in-game damage. Learning to swing cleanly and deliberately is the single most impactful skill to develop.

Available Melee Weapon Types

Swords

The most common starting weapon. Clean slashing arcs, fast swing cycle, and manageable weight. Base damage 5 with the basic longsword. Good all-around choice for learning enemy patterns.

Axes

Slightly slower than swords but higher base damage per hit. The extra weight makes them feel more impactful. Base damage 8 with the basic two-handed axe according to Fast Lawyer’s Early Access testing.

Hammers

Slower than axes with the highest per-hit damage among one-handed options. The wide arc can hit multiple enemies in tight groups. Requires the most physical space to use effectively.

Key Mechanics

Swing Force

Full, committed swings deal maximum damage. The game calculates damage partly from the force of your physical motion. Lazy or short swings deal reduced damage.

Hit Registration

If your weapon clips an enemy during the swing (rather than making a clean arc contact), the hit may not register. This is the most common complaint about melee combat and the primary skill gap between new and experienced players.

Range

You must be at arm’s length from an enemy. If you are too close, your weapon phases through them without dealing damage. This is a deliberate design choice to prevent button-mashing and reward positioning.

Best Practices

  1. Give yourself space before each swing.
  2. Commit fully to the arc — do not pull back mid-swing.
  3. Parry with a shield before counterattacking (May 2026 update made this much easier).
  4. Upgrade your weapon early — base damage weapons feel weak quickly.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about One More Delve.

What is the best one-handed melee weapon?

Swords offer the best balance of speed and damage. Axes deal more damage per hit but are slower. The difference is small enough that personal preference matters more than tier lists.

Why does my weapon sometimes go through enemies?

This is the phasing issue. It occurs when your weapon clips an enemy mid-swing rather than making a clean arc. Give yourself more distance and commit to full swings.

Does weapon length affect range?

Two-handed weapons are longer than one-handed options and can hit enemies slightly further away. This is one advantage of going two-handed, but the trade-off is losing your shield.
